A game-structuring approach applied to estuary management in South Africa

Abstract: A game-structuring method is applied in a contested, real-world setting of estuary management in South Africa. The key activities undertaken in applying the six step game-structuring method are described and artefacts developed in the process are provided. Participants were readily able to identify strategic outcomes and payoffs in the case. Conversely, identifying actions in a well-timed sequence proved difficult. Choices to focus the discussion of actions on real-world biophysical and infrastructural interve… Show more

“…In step 3, different types of game theory models can be constructed depending on the type of problem being examined. Non-cooperative game theory models are used in situations with fixed rules and where actors pursue individual interests, while cooperative game theory models explore situations where there is a willingness for coordination and sharing of resources (Hermans & Cunningham, 2018;Madani, 2010;Slinger et al, 2014).…”

“…The game structuring method was first applied successfully in South Africa (Slinger et al, 2014) before being implemented in Houston in Texas ( Kothuis et al, 2014), on Texel in the Netherlands (d 'Hont & Slinger, 2018), and in Tema in Ghana (Kothuis & Slinger, 2018). The game structuring method represents an extension to problem structuring approaches, and is focused on incorporating diverse stakeholder values into a common understanding of a complex real-life problem situation (Cunningham et al, 2014).…”
