A Fuzzy Rule-Based Model of Vibrotactile Perception via an Automobile Haptic Screen

Abstract: International audienceWith the increased popularity of touch-sensitive surfaces, much attention has been drawn to their security-related issues, as they currently rely only on the visual sense for feedback. To improve operability, vibrotactile signals may be delivered to the finger on screen interaction. The way vibrotactile signals affect human perception is examined via three measured variables, related to their energy, velocity, and spectral complexity, and which are analytically defined in this paper. It i… Show more

“…The Vibrotactile Perception problem [50] consists of predicting the comfort level for a series of N S = 48 vibrotactile stimuli characterized by three physical attributes: energy (E), velocity (V) and spectral complexity or entropy (S). The comfort values for the 48 stimuli were obtained by asking a panel of 16 users three times, and averaging the results.…”

“…As described in [50], the granularity of the variables is 5 fuzzy subsets for E, 3 for V and S and 5 again for the output variable (the predicted comfort value). Given the small size of the dataset, both SR and SRO methods used a rule removal threshold S[%] = 5.…”

“…Haptics has recently received much attention in studies on the multimodal interaction between human and virtual or augmented environments for teleoperation, rehabilitation, games, , training simulators, automobiles, and electronic devices. , Together with visual and aural sensations, haptic sensation can provide more intuitive and realistic interactions with displayed contents, such as object shape, texture discrimination, and object manipulation. , Providing an aural sensation with haptic and visual sensations is relatively easy because synchronization is enough to realize multimodality, and an audio system can usually be spatially separated from haptic and display devices . However, integrating haptic devices with high-quality display devices usually involves technological challenges because of spatial interference (e.g., haptic feedback on top of the displayed objects) and optical hindrance.…”
