With the global awareness of sustainability issues, sustainable development is being increasingly recognized by governments and industries. In addressing these issues, organizations worldwide have taken initiatives in adopting sustainability practices in their supply chain transferring it to sustainable supply chain management. In order to establish a responsible sustainable supply chain management, an effective way would be to make sure that the potential suppliers for procuring required components are precisely assessed and evaluated based on sustainable criteria. Therefore, this paper proposes a practical decision making approach to evaluate and select the most sustainable suppliers for an automotive spare part manufacturer licensed under a France-based automotive organization. Firstly, a requirement gathering approach, the audition check-list approach, is designed to facilitate the process of data gathering for supplier evaluation based on three pillars of sustainability. Next, the gathered data are processed using a proposed fuzzy inference system to remove impreciseness and vagueness in the gathered sustainability related data. The strength of this model falls into its applicability in data gathering phase which helps decision makers in manufacturing company to perform a fast audition of a typical supplier. Secondly, the final sustainable ranking of suppliers using the proposed fuzzy inference system provide a precise and less uncertain sustainability performance scoring which makes the developed approach a reliable system for making sustainable sourcing decisions. Comparison and sensitivity analysis are performed to evaluate the proficiency of the developed approach. Finally, theoretical and managerial implications together with conclusions of the study are presented.

Abstract:In recent years, sustainability has been a major focus of fashion business operations because fashion industry development causes harmful effects to the environment, both indirectly and directly. The sustainability of the fashion industry is generally based on several levels and this study focuses on investigating the optimal supplier selection problem for sustainable materials supply in fashion clothing production. Following the ground rule that sustainable development is based on the Triple Bottom Line (TBL), this paper has framed twelve criteria from the economic, environmental and social perspectives for evaluating suppliers. The well-established multi-criteria decision making tool Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) is employed for ranking potential suppliers among the pool of suppliers. Through a real case study, the proposed approach has been applied and some managerial implications are derived.

The purpose of this paper is to propose an integrated multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) approach to analyze interrelationships among sustainability criteria, weight them, and then evaluate suppliers according to these criteria. Data were collected through interviewing with seven experts who are involved in the procurement department of the case. Interpretive structural modelling (ISM), and pairwise comparison questionnaire are used to elicit the existence, strength of relationships among criteria and then weight them by using Fuzzy (Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (FDEMATEL), Fuzzy Preference Programming (FPP), and Analytical Network Process (ANP). Then, Fuzzy Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (FTOPSIS) is employed to evaluate suppliers based on identified and analyzed sustainability criteria. This study provides several implications for practitioners and scholars. First, the results show the efficiency of the proposed approach in practice. Second, respondents state that the proposed approach was very useful in decision making based on interrelationships among criteria, alternatives and policies. Third, findings validate the significant difference in rankings with or without considering interdependencies among criteria.
