RESUMO O fator estimulador de células granulocitárias (G-CSF) é uma glicoproteína descrita há mais de 20 anos, possui aprovação da FDA (Food and Drug Administration) e do Ministério da Saúde no PALAVRAS-CHAVE Isquemia cerebral. The granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a glycoprotein described almost twenty years ago; it is approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and Anvisa (section of Brazilian Health Ministry) for the treatment of neutropenic states and in bone marrow transplants. G-CSF stimulates granulocyte precursors and it has a crucial role in the survival of mature, post-mitotic neutrophils, through apoptosis inhibition. Beyond its systemic effect, G-CSF has an important and formerly unrecognized role in the central nervous system. G-CSF administration mobilizes bone marrow stem cells to the peripheral blood, and cross the blood-brain-barrier to the target the lesion. G-CSF's Central Nervous KEY WORDS Brain ischaemia.
