A Fully Automated and Highly Versatile System for Testing Multi-cognitive Functions and Recording Neuronal Activities in Rodents

Abstract: We have developed a fully automated system for operant behavior testing and neuronal activity recording by which multiple cognitive brain functions can be investigated in a single task sequence. The unique feature of this system is a custom-made, acoustically transparent chamber that eliminates many of the issues associated with auditory cue control in most commercially available chambers. The ease with which operant devices can be added or replaced makes this system quite versatile, allowing for the implement… Show more

“…[25] The results of our study differ from other trials on animals where rats were repeatedly exposed to anesthesia, when it was noticed that repeated pentobarbital anesthesia in rats (eight fold) affected their behavior towards increased impulsivity, which was assesed by changes in reaction time. This fact was more obvious in the elderly rat population [18]. One explanation of these findings is that in our experiment animals were exposed to anesthesia just once and not repeatedly.…”

“…Daily recording sessions included behavioral data and simultaneously recorded neural data that were time-stamped in the form of TTL pulses instantaneously sent to the neural recording system via the SuperPort TTL card (DIG-726) and the Cheetah data acquisition system. The commands sent by Med PC to run the behavioral experiment were also recorded in the Neuralynx event file as TTL pulses via a SmartCtrl connection panel (SG-716B; Zheng and Ycu, 2012). After each completed session, tetrodes were advanced about 40 µm.…”

“…These unwanted effects can be largely resolved through the use of automated training systems such as B.F. Skinner's operant conditioning chamber [10]. These systems have evolved for various applications, and can include touch screens [11], acoustically transparent chambers [12] and high throughput systems implemented in the home cage [13,14]. The various custom made and commercially available automated training systems available are mostly implemented in Skinner boxes however.…”
