Analytical and numerical investigations of the stability of prestressed stayed columns with three crossarms branching laterally and symmetrically are presented. It is shown that modal symmetry is broken automatically if the critical mode is antisymmetric, which distinguishes it from the stayed columns studied hitherto. The governing imperfection distribution that should be adopted within finite element analysis to capture the actual load-carrying capacity is also obtained. The findings suggest that when the critical buckling mode is symmetric, the governing imperfection distribution should also be symmetric. Conversely, if the critical buckling mode is antisymmetric, a symmetric imperfection distribution or an asymmetric imperfection distribution may be adopted as the most severe imperfection distribution depending on the system characteristics. This would enable designers to determine an accurate prediction of the actual strength through nonlinear finite element analysis.

Selected, extended paper from the SDSS 2019 special session ECCS/TC8 – Structural Stability Cable‐stayed columns offer several advantages among traditional solutions. Owing to the additional restraint given by the prestressed cables and cross‐arms, they can provide enhanced buckling resistance in comparison to conventional columns. They are also aesthetically appealing, combining a strong architectural effect with a top‐notch engineering solution. This paper presents a design approach for the stability design of prestressed cable‐stayed columns. This method is based on the well‐known Ayrton‐Perry format, combining first‐ and second‐order effects. The imperfection factors were calibrated on the basis of experimental results. This method is consistent with design rules for uniform columns in Eurocode 3 and is easy to apply.

The use of prestressed steel stayed columns systems in construction has numerous advantages related to its light weight, load bearing capacity and assembly process flexibility. A practical application of these structural systems could be recently observed in Brazil for the erection of the Rock in Rio III world stage. In this event the use of prestressed stayed carbon steel columns were used for temporary shoring, optimizing the erection sequence. The main stage had a 82 meters span with a 40 m clear height and a 4500 m 2 area. Two stayed column were used, both with a 20 m length. Up to the present the majority of investigations of these stayed systems have been focused on carbon steel columns. In view of these facts the present paper aimed to present an investigation of the structural behaviour of columns made with the austenitic stainless steel. Numerical models were developed in the Ansys software, focusing on the structural system load carrying capacity and the optimal level of prestress to be used. The optimal level of prestress to be used was also determined considering the influence of initial imperfections. The results confirmed that the use of prestress in the cables significantly enhance the ultimate loads and ductility capacity of the columns.
