“…The questionnaire form (see Appendix 1) was prepared using the KoBo Toolbox software, a free tool for on-line data collection, and it contained questions related to basic features of the ecovillages as well as their approach to the management of water, food and energy. A link to the questionnaire was sent by e-mail to 392 ecologically-oriented rural intentional communities in Europe that had been pre-identified on the basis of databases publicly available on the Internet from the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN), GEN Europe, Baltic Ecovillage Network, Fellowship for Intentional Community, Ecobasa and national networks of ecovillages in European countries 3 . These sources were complemented by the list of ecovillages published in Eurotopia Directory (2014).…”

“…There are a number of ways in which ecovillages try to realize their environmental goals. In their recent review, Barani et al (2018) enumerate various practices of ecovillages related to the management of basic resources: growing and preserving food, composting organic waste, securing water supply from on-site wells, harvesting rainwater, making use of locally available renewable energy sources or, finally, lowering the overall demand for resources of the community in various ways (e.g., by reducing car usage, constructing energy efficient houses or preventing food waste). In general, ecovillages try to close the loops of resource flows to the largest extent possible in order to protect and regenerate the natural environment and form a productive, vibrant 772/833 community.…”

“…Analyzing the integrity of the ecovillage is an interdisciplinary subject, which requires a variety of expertise to address the aspects such as energy, building design, water, agriculture, and so on. Therefore, evaluating all dimensions and characteristics of ecovillages is beyond the experience of a researcher [51]. Therefore, networking and collaboration among stakeholders, including less formal or time-intensive interactions by regulators, contribute to significant decision-making and sustained leadership [60].…”

“…The energy crisis that started in the 1970s, triggered a rethink of the relationship between the environment and human beings (Duncan, 2001). In some countries, small groups of forward-thinking people built up ecovillages together to pursue a sustainable lifestyle with low environmental impact (Barani, Alibeygi, & Papzan, 2018;Dawson, 2006;Adalilar, Alkibay, & Eser, 2015). In line with its original motivation, ecovillages are devoted to consciously changing the lifestyle of communities (Westskog, TanjaWinther, & Aasen, 2018;Hong & HandanVicdan, 2016), improving people's quality of life and wellbeing (Hall, 2015), and paying attention to social equity (Xue, 2014;Karakaya, Hidalgo, & Nuur, 2014).…”
