Formwork System Selection Criteria for Building Construction Projects: A Structural Equation Modelling Approach

Selecting the appropriate formwork system (FWS) is a critical aspect in the successful completion of reinforced concrete (RC) building construction projects. The selected FWS has a significant impact on the cost, time, and quality performances of the project. As there are many FWSs and formwork fabricators (FWFs) available, the selection of the FWS depends on several compromising and conflicting criteria. This study aims to identify the FWS selection criteria groupings (e.g., latent factors) and investigate the quantitative interrelationships among them. For this purpose, 35 FWS selection criteria were identified through literature review, and a questionnaire was developed. The data from the questionnaire were statistically analyzed, and five latent factors were identified: FWS-FWF characteristics, structural design, local conditions, cost, and performance indicators. A conceptual framework was developed based on the latent factors, and a structural equation modelling (SEM) approach was utilized to identify the effects among the latent factors. The results of the SEM approach confirmed that FWS-FWF characteristics are affected by the structural design and local conditions and FWS-FWF characteristics have a substantial effect on cost and the performance indicators of the project. The findings of this study may assist construction professionals in selecting the FWS in building construction projects.

The poor collaboration among the main actors in the construction has become a challenge for the low performance of the design-construction efficiency (DCE). This study investigated and quantitatively evaluated the influence of network relationships in stakeholders’ collaborative management (SCM) and their effect on the performance of the DCE of industrialized construction projects. Hypotheses were proposed and tested. Based on multiple empirical cases, semistructured interviews and questionnaire surveys were conducted. Social network analysis (SNA) was adopted as a research technique for graphical analysis and quantitative evaluation of the SCM. The study’s findings revealed that the different sets and modes of collaboration directly impacted the performance of the DCE of industrialized construction. Further findings showed that strong collaboration among the contractors, designers, and manufacturers significantly impacts achieving better efficiency. Meanwhile, DCE was the most important driving factor for the SCM. The network relationships had a positive impact on the DCE. The study contributes knowledge in demonstrating the application of network relationships in industrialized construction research and helps practitioners establish a strong SCM to improve the efficiency of industrialized construction in a wider global context.

Prefabricated components production line optimization is critical for improving industrialized building construction efficiency; however, few studies focus on the production line optimization problem in context of industrialized building construction. In order to optimize the large random orders in the prefabricated components production process, this research proposes a model to minimize variance of the production capacity utilization of prefabricated components in the production cycle, and the ant colony optimization algorithm is introduced to solve the mixed production line sequencing optimization problem. By optimizing the sequence, the production capacity of the component production is balanced, and the capacity utilization rate in the industrialized building construction process is improved. Finally, the effectiveness of the method is verified through a real case of fabricated building components production. The results show that the variance of daily production capacity utilization rate of the optimized hybrid component production line has reduced to 0.53%, which is significantly lower than the 2.45% before optimization. The proposed model could effectively achieve the production capacity balance of prefabricated components production line.
