The design and construction of foundation systems for metro rail projects require effective planning and performing analysis over various alternatives in achieving a suitable cost-effective solution. Often the foundation system is selected based on the Soil Bearing Capacity (SBC) and other onsite constraints are left unconsidered. This results in costly design changes during the execution stages and incurs severe delays in the project. This demands the application of advanced managerial techniques to select costeffective solutions during the design stages of metro rail projects. Value Engineering is one such function-oriented approach used in analyzing the functions of a product or a process and selecting a suitable solution that achieves all the required functions at the lowest possible cost. The application of the value engineering concept in metro rail projects would enable identifying suitable solutions while considering different alternatives over several criteria. Hence, this paper applies value engineering technique for selecting the suitable foundation type for the construction of metro rail projects. A case study of an ongoing metro rail project was considered and three foundation alternative types and nine significant selection criteria were identified. The foundation alternatives were quantitatively analyzed using the weighted evaluation technique. The results indicate that for limited availability of Right of Way (ROW), the foundation with Controlled Low Strength Mortar (CLSM) is highly suitable. In scenarios of limited ROW with less SBC use of pile foundation is identified as a suitable cost-effective foundation type.

This paper proposes a novel performance measurement framework to enhance the decision-making process in assessing the ship manufacturing (shipbuilding, ship repair, and ship conversion/modification) industry. Integrated Value Engineering and Risk Assessment (VENRA) approach performance measurement for ship manufacturing is developed to tackle the problem. Thorough literature and critical study of the existing performance measurement for ship manufacturing are reviewed to create novel VENRA performance measurements. The attributes collected from the literature are grouped into four criteria performance, named VENRA attributes, combining the technical, business, external and safety/risk performance groups. The initial model will be assessed through fuzzy DEMATEL TOPSIS to achieve the weighted score of each attribute. The framework will be applied to three shipyard case studies in Indonesia. The quantitative data (from shipyards) and qualitative data (from expert opinion/judgment) will be included to get the results and the framework’s effectiveness.

The purpose of this study is to optimize costs by analyzing a case study of the Energy Utility Company (EUC) project in Malaysia and building the main electric distribution station (MEDS) project specifically. In order to achieve this objective, Value Engineering (VE) technique as one of the proven tools was selected, and three alternatives were applied. The first alternative was to reduce the room sizes of the building. The second alternative was to replace the plaster painting with normal painting, and the last one was to replace painting up to 1.5 meters with 1 meter of the high of walls from the floor. Results approved that the implementation of VE has successfully reduced the cost of the project without compromising the quality of the materials. For the first alternative, 17.1% of the cost was saved. Regarding the second alternative, 69.8% of the total cost for ceiling painting was saved, and for the third alternative, 41.6% of the total cost of walls from the floor was saved. The findings of this research may serve as a guide for engineers, scholars, and constructors to reduce the cost of the building project.
