A Framework for Using Web Usage Mining to Personalise E-learning

Abstract: Web usage mining can contribute to finding significant educational knowledge. It can play a vital role in the personalisation aspects of any domain. We propose a framework for personalizing e-learning that necessitates careful attention towards individual learning styles. We focus on identifying learning patterns of learners and the sequence of choosing learning resources in relation to their learning styles. A prototype for an adaptive web based course has been developed where the learning environment is modi… Show more

“…With the transition to Web-based learning technologies and with the broader adoption of LMS systems, several researchers (e.g., Ba-Omar et al, 2007;Marquardt et al, 2004) have adopted traditional WUM techniques to analyze learning data. It is important to note that certain characteristics of LMS systems make the process somewhat simpler.…”

“…Typically, researchers adopt a heuristic approach (e.g., limit all activities to 10, 30, or 60 minutes) (Ba-Omar, Petrounias, & Anwar, 2007;Munk & Drlík, 2011) and do not address the consequences of such adopted heuristics on the produced statistical model. In this paper, we try to evaluate what are the consequences of the different estimation heuristics on the results of the final predictive model.…”

“…The E-learning system is an evolution of information technology, network technology and multimedia technology to achieve maximum efficiency in education. E-learning systems are now widely accepted because it has the flexibility to adjust content, which will be up to date, provides an opportunity for everyone to learn and gives freedom of research without restrictions of time and location [1]. In addition, e-learning systems are also used as a communication tool between teacher and learner by using modern communication tools such as e-mail, web-board, chat, etc [2].…”

“…In the research [1] the learner provided an answer for the online VARK questionnaire and studied e-learning. Then, obtained studying behaviors or used the main web of Web logs to analyze via data mining techniques to find the learning path's content for learners with different learning styles.…”
