A framework for understanding artificial intelligence research: insights from practice

Abstract: PurposeThe current evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) practices and applications is creating a disconnection between modern-day information system (IS) research and practices. The purpose of this study is to propose a classification framework that connects the IS discipline to contemporary AI practices.Design/methodology/approachWe conducted a review of practitioner literature to derive our framework's key dimensions. We reviewed 103 documents on AI published by 25 leading technology companies ranked in… Show more

“…The need to develop suitable ethical positions toward AI is also widely accepted, while sustainability currently seems to play only a subordinate role in relation to very specific ecological issues. Although, we found first references by research and practice on this topic (European Commission, 2020; Goralski and Tan, 2020), indeed, the fundamental questions raised in the current discourse on AI (Bawack et al, 2021) mainly point in a completely different direction than those commonly associated with sustainability. This is likely to cause confusion and limit the impact of both discourses.…”

“…Artificial intelligence AI is an overarching term for a variety of different design approaches that enable technical devices to perform operations similar to human cognition (Bawack et al, 2021). The added value that deductive reasoning, knowledge-based systems, pattern recognition and other AI technologies can provide has lately been documented in numerous different contexts (cf.…”

“…The identification of the operator behind the AI use case allows for further assessment of the corresponding implications, such as the degree of influence on the business value contribution the company has itself (i.e., the more tasks of the AI use case are assigned to the AI, the lower is the human influence), or how much increase in workload will come along with it (the more tasks of the AI use case are assigned to human workers, the higher will be the workload). As scholars state, AI is used to augment human capabilities [5], while "humans can still offer a more holistic, intuitive approach" [23, p.577], focusing on more creative assignments [21]. We refer to Davenport and Ronanki [11], Ransbotham et al [40], as well as Dellermann et al [13] for the different forms of AI collaboration with human intelligence.…”

“…Thus, using traditional technology acceptance theories and models would not sufficiently explain consumer adoption of AI [11]. This challenge has led to several calls for research on new theoretical developments and perspectives that focus on the specificities of AI technologies to understand their adoption by consumers [10], [12], [13].…”
