A Framework for the Estimation and Validation of Energy Consumption in Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract: Body sensor networks and implantable and ingestible medical devices energy efficiency is a substantial key factor in network lifetime and functionality. This work confronts the nodes’ energy problem by establishing a unified energy consumption framework comprised of theoretical model, energy simulator model, and electronic metering modules that can be attached to the nodes. A theoretical analysis, a simulation procedure, and the design and development of three prototype electronic metering modules are presente… Show more

“…In BSNs, sensor energy is consumed by three main modules: the sensing module responsible for sensing physiological data, the microcontroller unit (MCU) in charge of performing of data processing such as data sampling and the radio communication module responsible of the wireless communication between the sensor and coordinator [7, 8, 63, 64]. Thus, the total energy consumed by a sensor is expressed as: Enormalt=Esensing+EMCU+Eradiowhere Esensing=VnormalsInormalstnormals EMCU=VMCUaIMCUatMCUa+VMCUiIMCUitMCUi Eradio=VtxItxNtxttx+VrxIrxNrxtrx+VlxIlxtlx Enormals is the energy consumed from sensing; Vnormals and Inormals are the voltage and current energy consumed from sensing data during the time tnormals.…”
