A framework for information extraction from tables in biomedical literature

Abstract: The scientific literature is growing exponentially, and professionals are no more able to cope with the current amount of publications. Text mining provided in the past methods to retrieve and extract information from text; however, most of these approaches ignored tables and figures. The research done in mining table data still does not have an integrated approach for mining that would consider all complexities and challenges of a table. Our research is examining the methods for extracting numerical (number o… Show more

“…Table Extraction. The more general problem of retrieving information from tables has been studied in past works (Milosevic et al, 2019;Ghasemi-Gol and Szekely, 2018;Wei et al, 2006;Herzig et al, 2020). Our focus in this paper is on the problem of extracting and interpreting content of tables characteristic to machine learning papers.…”

“…Table is a structure which consists of rows and columns where each cell may or may not contain a value. Each column represents a set of similar values where each row is a record of set of different variables [3]. Table is a data visualization method that no business organization can get rid of.…”

“…Third, both tables and images can be very complex: images can include multiple panels and inserts that require segmentation, while tables may have combined several rows and columns imposing additional dependencies on the data. To the best of our knowledge, only a few publications have attempted to parse tables from the scientific literature using heuristics and machine learning approaches ( Jensen et al., 2019 ; Milosevic et al., 2019 ).…”
