A framework for improving effort management in software projects

Abstract: Rapid changes in information technology (IT) set challenges to software project effort estimation. Besides effort estimation, software projects involve various other effort-related functions which have an effect on the effort estimation. Some of these functions are required by the capability maturity models such as Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI). However, both the capability maturity model requirements and research on software project effort is very fragmented. This article proposes a framework f… Show more

“…One of the principal developments in the software process domain has been the emergence of process maturity frameworks, with ISO/IEC 15504 [5] and CMMI [6] considered the most dominant [7][8][9]. Although process maturity reference frameworks are sometimes criticised for being cumbersome and costly [10], ISO/IEC 15504 [5] and CMMI [6] have been shown to deliver significant benefits for software development [11][12][13][14][15][16].…”

“…Also, Levy focuses on the importance of effort distribution in software development process. Haapio [13] gave definition of effort which includestotal time needed to complete the software development, total man power required, total time period (days, months and years) and complexity of the project. Madhuri and Arora [24] state that effort distribution plays a driving role in both type of software development process methodology i.e.…”

“…The goal of our research is to increase effort estimation accuracy in the software industry and to promote method transparency. The proposed method is a part of a framework for improving software project effort management 20, an organized process to estimate, collect, monitor and control, and analyze effort related to software projects and their activities 21. The framework has been applied at Tieto Finland Oy.…”
