A Framework for Eliciting Players’ Mental Models of Game Mechanics

Abstract

This research delves into the relationship between mental models and game mechanics within the context of playing the online game Wordle. The study employs concept mapping as an elicitation method to capture each participant's mental model of the game's mechanics, aiming to unveil the underlying structures that govern their understanding of the game's mechanics, as well as the strategies and decision-making processes they employ while playing. By analyzing the maps generated by participants, this research seeks to quantitatively and qualitatively assess the ability of their mental models to express how well they can represent the way Wordle works in relation to the game's mechanics. The findings of this study show connections between mental models and game mechanics, shedding light on the cognitive underpinnings that drive player decisions, strategy development, and overall gameplay comprehension.
