A Framework for Assessing Modeling Performance and Effects of Rainfall-Catchment-Drainage Characteristics on Nutrient Urban Runoff in Poorly Gauged Watersheds

Abstract: Protection of surface water quality plays a crucial role for sustainable urban watershed management since the wash-off from impervious contaminated surfaces generates transport phenomena from a range of pollutants (like nutrients, such as total nitrogen (Ntot) and total phosphorus (Ptot)). This leads to the consequent reduction of water quality, and to phenomena, such as eutrophication and the presence of algae blooms. For this reason, a comprehensive understanding of nutrient build-up and wash-off is essentia… Show more

“…It is a difficult and complicated process to know the water quality status of the whole river basin, determine the influencing factors of water quality, and improve the water environment quality of the river basin [26]. To provide a holistic vision of all the variables involved in the system, PCA was used on the Xin'anjiang River [27,28].…”

“…Despite continuous expensive research and efforts to gather hydrologic data, there are still some areas of the world with scarce hydrometric gauging stations [2,3]. These areas have been representing a motivating and challenging topic for researchers and decision-makers.…”

“…The distance measure was the Squared Euclidean distance. A distance criterion between two variables defined how closely they were associated within the group, and the smaller the clustering distance, the higher the similarity of the data points [9,10,40]. HCA by means of hierarchical dendrograms was performed by using SPSS 24.0 (IBA SPSS Statistics, Armonk, NY, USA) applied to the runoff data for different land use types.…”
