Deploying Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled virtual network function (VNF) chains to Cloud-Edge infrastructures requires determining a placement for each VNF that satisfies all set deployment requirements as well as a software-defined routing of traffic flows between consecutive functions that meets all set communication requirements. In this article, we present a declarative solution, EdgeUsher, to the problem of how to best place VNF chains to Cloud-Edge infrastructures. EdgeUsher can determine all eligible placements for a set of VNF chains to a Cloud-Edge infrastructure so to satisfy all of their hardware, IoT, security, bandwidth, and latency requirements. It exploits probability distributions to model the dynamic variations in the available Cloud-Edge infrastructure and to assess output eligible placements against those variations.

In this paper we tangle with the mechanisms and solutions of transferring intelligence to the IoT edge level and we document existing approaches on how to include hardware reconfigurability on the edge level of IoT in order to reprogram an IoT device's hardware during run time. The approach enables the dynamic allocation of hardware IP cores as a mechanism to enhance the processing performance of IoT end nodes in analogy to the needs of the IoT infrastructure. The goal is to provide a an intelligence distribution mechanism that moves computation resources to end node devices so as to maintain the resilience of an IoT service at high level. We showcase this technology by proposing a design approach and a relevant architecture that can be used in order to program/reconfigure the hardware and software of IoT end Nodes using IP core hardware acceleration. Through the above process, we can considerably enhance end node performance in terms of processing power and make it intelligent enough not just to collect data but also to aggregate them and process them to extract intelligent decisions locally.

Many advances have been introduced recently for service-oriented computing and applications (SOCA). The Internet of Things (IoT) has been pervasive in various application domains. Fog/Edge computing models have shown techniques that move computational and analytics capabilities from centralized data centers where most enterprise business services have been located to the edge where most customer's Things and their data and actions reside. Network functions between the edge and the cloud can be dynamically provisioned and managed through service APIs. Microservice architectures are increasingly used to simplify engineering, deployment and management of distributed services in not only cloud-based powerful machines but also in light-weighted devices. Therefore, a key question for the research in SOCA is how do we leverage existing techniques and develop new ones for coping with and supporting the changes of data and computation resources as well as customer interactions arising in the era of IoT and Fog/Edge computing. In this editorial paper, we attempt to address this question by focusing on the concept of ensembles for IoT, network functions and clouds.
