A Fragmentizing Interface to a Large Corpus of Digitized Text: (Post)humanism and Non-consumptive Reading via Features

Abstract: While the idea of distant reading does not rule out the possibility of close reading of the individual components of the corpus of digitized text that is being distant-read, this ceases to be the case when parts of the corpus are, for reasons relating to intellectual property, not accessible for consumption through downloading followed by close reading. Copyright restrictions on material in collections of digitized text such as the HathiTrust Digital Library (HTDL) necessitate providing facilities for non-cons… Show more

“…While collecting data from a platform such as Quora, what data we can see and retrieve depends on the list of search keywords, the API user's access and privileges, the platform's search operation, and etc. These list, API, platform become the "apparatus" [6,9] through which we view the users' activities on Quora. Diffractive methodology emphasizes that the apparatus and the phenomena under study are intertwined [6,80], rendering the collected dataset co-configured by the apparatus (e.g., search keywords, API) and the phenomenon (e.g., user discussion and participation).…”

“…Initially, the opportunity for joining a stage was only available if a user was invited by the administrators of the stage. At present, all users can create new stages or join existing stages by sending join requests which are sometimes subject to the stage administrators' approval 9 . A user can also share an existing thread's link with the users in the stage.…”

“…Innovations such as data harmonization (Niemi, Näppilä & Järvelin, 2009), interoperability frameworks (Hughes et al, 2016), and feature extraction tools (Bhattacharyya, Organisciak & Downie, 2015) are greatly improving the capabilities of research communities to access and manipulate data in computing systems. Underpinning these new systems-level features and functionalities are a number of robust conceptual, logical, and physical data models.…”

“…Underpinning these new systems-level features and functionalities are a number of robust conceptual, logical, and physical data models. These include data-and curation-oriented models such as the Open Provenance Model (Kwasnikowska, Moreau & Bussche, 2015) and the Research Object Model (Belhajjame et al, 2015), as well as ontologies such as the the Semantic Web for Earth and Environmental Terminology (SWEET) 1 and the Gene Ontology 2 . However, the formal literature of data science often glosses over or excludes the design work that goes into developing and implementing data models (Simsion, 2007).…”
