A Fractal Wormhole Model for Cold Heavy Oil Production

Abstract: Wormholes are believed to be generated during the process of cold production and are responsible for enhanced production rates. Understanding the wormhole patterns generated inside the reservoir formation is critical to improve the recovery efficiency and to model the fluid flow behaviour in the cold production process. In this paper, we have proposed that the wormhole growth can be described by the Diffusion-Limited Aggregation (DLA) model, which naturally relates to a broad variety of branchinggrowth pattern… Show more

“…Fractal network models rely on the produced sand volume to develop the wormhole-network and have been used in field optimizations of CHOPS and the design of EOR processes [22]. Often the growth of wormholes in fractal models do not depend on the underlying geology of the formation.…”

“…Several models use fractal networks to determine wormhole-network geometry based upon sand-production volumes (Liu and Zhao 2005). The fractal wormhole networks developed on the basis of the field production data have been used to design EOR processes and field optimization on existing CHOPS wells and fields (Liu and Zhao 2005). Other methods developed rely upon predefined wormhole-network geometries with simple geometrical layouts (Tremblay 2005(Tremblay , 2009).…”

“…One proposed approach used fractal networks to model wormhole networks, which rely on a probabilistic active walker approach to create wormhole networks (Liu 2005). The probabilistic active worker approach takes the wormhole as traveling in the direction of lowest cohesive reservoir strength, however there is a probability function attached to this choice, therefore the same model can produce various different geometries depending on the seed for the random number generator.…”
