A formal semantics for Grafcet specifications

Abstract: Abstract-This paper shows how the behavior of a model described in the specification language proposed by the IEC 60848 standard can be represented, without semantics loss, in a formal manner, by a finite state machine (FSM) with logic inputs and outputs. This contribution is illustrated on a nontrivial example; this case study points out that the duration of the construction of the equivalent FSM complies with the requirements of designers of automation systems.

“…2) Succession of Firing Stages Meets the Execution Scheme Given in Section II-B: Indeed, the phase sequencer respects the indefinite alternation of a reaction (lines 3-6) followed by an external event (lines [8][9][10][11][12][13]. Especially, physical time elapses only in a Stable state (in accordance with line 11), which allows temporal events via the model of an active timed variable.…”

“…If the unstable states are also abstracted (as in [15] and [10]), then the algorithm may be easily modified to get a more compact SCG by saving only stable classes and the transitions between them labeled by external events. For the simple example in Fig.…”
