A formal approach for the presentation of interactive multimedia documents

Abstract: This paper presents the on-going work using a formal approach for the design of Interactive Multimedia Documents (IMDs) based on the RT-LOTOS formal description technique. The present work extends this approach proposing the scheduling of IMDs based on a simple and operational model obtained as a result from the reachability analysis. One important breakthrough of this model is that it is a scheduling graph that provides the control of the occurrence of non-deterministic events, such as user interactions, with… Show more

“…The reachability analysis enables the verification of consistency properties based on the description of the logical and temporal behavior of the document. The verification of IMDs is further detailed in [5], [6], [7], and [8]. The reachability graph is representative enough for the verification of consistency properties.…”

“…Once the MainReader is dealing with a state of the TLA, it triggers a respective timer (5). Then, all the control of the transitions of a state is handled by the Thread Controller (6). This module creates a thread for each valid transition leaving the current state (7).…”

“…A formal approach toward consistency checking of interactive multimedia documents was dealt with in [8], and an approach for temporal consistency checking based on the transformation of scenario specification into networks, called constraint network fragments (cnfs), is presented in [7]. However, the approaches presented in [8] and in [7] are not dynamic consistency checking mechanisms i.e they do not provided immediate feedback to the author of the presentation, when an invalid constraint is specified.…”

“…The quest for a model of the complex temporal relationships in multimedia objects and presentations has been ongoing in the literature for some years [23,14,22,15,13,25]. A model of a multimedia presentation provides a declarative description of its contents and the relationships among the different elements that define it.…”
