The photophysical properties of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) in a novel tribranched donor-π-acceptor chromophore, triphenoxazine-2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine (tri-PXZ-TRZ), with thermally activated delayed fluorescence character was investigated in different aprotic solvents by steady-state spectroscopy and femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy measurements. Increasing the solvent polarity led to a significant increase in the Stokes shift. The large Stokes shift in highly polar solvents was attributed to ICT properties upon excitation; this resulted in a strong interaction between the tri-PXZ-TRZ molecule and the surrounding solvent, which led to a strong solvation process. Quantum-chemical calculations and changes in the dipole moment showed that this compound has a large degree of ICT. Furthermore, an apolar environment helped to preserve the symmetry of tri-PXZ-TRZ and to enhance its emission efficiency. The femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy results indicated that the excited-state dynamics of this push-pull molecule were strongly influenced by solvent polarity through the formation of a solvent-stabilized ICT state. The excited-state relaxation mechanism of tri-PXZ-TRZ was proposed by performing target model analysis on the femtosecond transient absorption spectra. In addition, the delayed fluorescence of tri-PXZ-TRZ was significantly modulated by a potential competition between solvation and intersystem crossing processes.

This paper presents a novel paper-based analytical device based on the colorimetric paper assays through its light reflectance. The device is portable, low cost (Ͻ20 dollars), and lightweight (only 176 g) that is available to assess the cost-effectiveness and appropriateness of the original health care or on-site detection information. Based on the light reflectance principle, the signal can be obtained directly, stably and user-friendly in our device. We demonstrated the utility and broad applicability of this technique with measurements of different biological and pollution target samples (BSA, glucose, Fe, and nitrite). Moreover, the real samples of Fe (II) and nitrite in the local tap water were successfully analyzed, and compared with the standard UV absorption method, the quantitative results showed good performance, reproducibility, and reliability. This device could provide quantitative information very conveniently and show great potential to broad fields of resource-limited analysis, medical diagnostics, and on-site environmental detection.

Two novel fluorogenic probes (HGMem‐2 and −3) for detecting Hg2+ were designed, synthesized and characterized. Probes based on a commercially available fluorophore (fluorescein) with high brightness were equipped with/without a photolabile group (2‐nitrobenzyl group), a membrane‐anchoring unit (cholesterol) and a Hg2+‐reactive moiety. Taking advantage of the hydrophobicity of the cholesterol group in the probe, a paper‐based device spotted with HGMem‐2 was developed as a Hg2+ paper indicators, and showed feasibility in complex cell lysate. Only upon UV photolysis, HGMem‐3 displayed more than 1900‐fold fluorescence enhancement with the addition of Hg2+. Furthermore, they exhibited pronounced Hg2+‐selective fluorogenic signalling behavior over other 45 analytes. Importantly, HGMem‐3 was utilized to specifically visualize Hg2+ near cell membrane in live HepG2 cells with high spatiotemporal resolution, avoiding the influence of reactive species outside cells successfully. Hence, our newly developed membrane‐anchored Hg2+ sensors provide useful tools for versatile applications in biological and environmental research.
