This study aimed in determining the October to December (OND) rainfall variability, seasonal onset and cessation dates in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The study used 10 years daily rainfall (2012–2021) and 30 years monthly rainfall datasets obtained from six meteorological stations. Other climate parameters of Sea Surface Temperature (SST), Winds, Relative Humidity and Vertical Velocity having temporal resolution of 30 years (1992-2021) were also used. Rainfall seasonal variability was analyzed using Climatological mean and Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis, onset and cessation dates was calculated using Cumulative percentage anomalies. The composite analysis was taken to examine the atmospheric circulation anomalies associated with OND seasonal rainfall. The study revealed that; OND season is characterized by normal to moderate rainfall variations from region to region with its peak marked at November (mid-season). Despite the slight differences over both Islands, average onset dates occur on third dekade of October (22nd – 25th) and cessation dates on the second dekade of December (i.e.10th -12th), indicating a maximum duration of 55- 60 days and makes a cycle of the short rains. The atmospheric circulation anomalies of SST, Winds, Relative Humidity and Vertical Velocity during wet years are linked with low level unstable moist winds originated from Congo basin. These anomalies are organized and converges with maritime north easterly winds from the Indian Ocean (mostly over the northern coast of Tanzania, including Zanzibar) and becoming a potential cause for rainfall during the season, while during dry years, the winds diverge as a result of dryness over the region. Therefore the results indicates that convergence (divergence) of the northwesterly to westerly, easterly and southeasterly flow contributed to the early(late) wetness (dryness) over Zanzibar and its surroundings. The study results will help to enhance the improvement of short rains seasonal onsets and cessations forecasts and improve the socio - economic activities over Zanzibar and Tanzanian at large.

A sunken solar greenhouse is a unique structure used in China that has good thermal performance and a low cost. To explore the thermal environment and the marginal effect area under the trellis membrane in a sunken solar greenhouse, daytime heat absorption and nighttime exothermic models of the greenhouse were established based on existing theories and hypotheses. An experimental study of the three-dimensional thermal environment of a solar greenhouse was also conducted in the Jinzhong Basin of Shanxi Province. The daytime heat absorption model described how the internal thermal environment of the greenhouse changes in three dimensions, while the nighttime model calculated the amount of heat released at night. The results showed that the rate of change in the maximum temperature difference along the height direction in the greenhouse was 13 times that along the vertical direction, and three times that along the horizontal direction. We also observed that the marginal effect area under the membrane varied over time and by month. The minimum value of the marginal effect area occurred at the middle cross-section, spanning the middle position of the greenhouse, and the maximum height was 2.7 m. The results of this study can provide theoretical guidance and experimental data for the thermal environment of greenhouses of the same type in the Jinzhong Basin of Shanxi Province, thus providing a basis for environmental regulation and low-temperature margins in greenhouses.

Negative compressibility metamaterials have attracted significant attention due to their distinctive properties and promising applications. Negative compressibility has been interpreted in two ways. Regarding the negative compressibility induced by a uniaxial load, it can only occur abruptly when the load reaches a certain threshold. Hence, it can be termed as transient negative compressibility. However, fabrication and experiments of such metamaterials have rarely been reported. Herein, we demonstrate them. Inspired by Braess’s paradox, a novel mechanical model is proposed with reversible negative compressibility. It shows multiple types of force responses during a loading-unloading cycle, including transient negative compressibility and hysteresis. Phase diagrams are employed to visualize the relationship between force responses and system parameters. Besides, explicit expressions for the conditions and intensity of negative compressibility are obtained for design and optimization. The model replacement method inspired by compliant mechanism design is then introduced to derive specific unit cell structures, thus avoiding intuition-based approaches. Additive manufacturing technology is utilized to fabricate the prototypes, and negative compressibility is validated via simulations and experiments. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that metamaterials with transient negative compressibility can be activated through electrical heating and can function as actuators, thereby possessing machine-like properties. The proposed mechanical metamaterial and the introduced design methodology have potentials to impact micro-electromechanical systems, force sensors, protective devices, and other applications.
