A five-year prospective study of fatigue in primary Sjögren's syndrome

Abstract: IntroductionFatigue is prevalent in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS), and contributes to the considerably reduced health related quality of life in this disease. The symptom is included in proposed disease activity and outcome measures for pSS. Several studies indicate that there is an inflammatory component of fatigue in pSS and other chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate fatigue change in pSS in a longitudinal study, and explore whether any clinical or laborato… Show more

“…Fatigue Visual Analog Scale (Fatigue-VAS) is a 100 mm line where the far left is 0 ¼ "no problems with fatigue and exhaustion", and the far right is 10 ¼ "so much fatigue and exhaustion that is possible to experience", during the last week [23]. The scale examines the intensity of fatigue reported by the patients during the clinical investigation.…”

“…The severity and prevalence of fatigue in newly diagnosed IBD is comparable to that of primary Sjøgren's syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis, and considerably more effort has been put into exploring these issues. 21,22 A higher prevalence of fatigue in IBD patients compared with healthy individuals has previously been reported, 10 but the use of fatigue as a primary outcome has not been widely investigated. This is the first report of fatigue in an IBD cohort consisting of only newly diagnosed patients not receiving anti-inflammatory or immune-modulating medication.…”

“…Patients with SS experience immune-mediated destruction of salivary and lacrimal glands leading to reduced lacrimal and salivary flow. Dry eyes and dry mouth together with fatigue are among the most common complaints [1, 2]. Extraglandular manifestations, such as involvement of the peripheral nervous, pulmonary, or gastrointestinal system, kidney, skin, myalgias, and arthralgias are frequently seen leading to reduced quality of life [3].…”
