A five elements sequential rotation array arranged in a single‐layer pentagonal substrate

Abstract: A pentagonal circular polarized subarray composed of five elements is proposed for operation at 2.45 GHz. The array is based on the sequential rotation architecture (SRA), implemented with a sequential phase distribution network. Despite a more complex design in comparison to the canonical 4‐elements SRA, a pentagonal subarray is more suited to be packed in a Bucky‐ball or icosahedral arrangement, ideal for smart antennas with wide angle spatial coverage. A single‐layer via‐less prototype is fabricated on a co… Show more

“…The patch element of the proposed array is based on a design originally proposed in [14], and already employed for SRA array, [12, 15], for indoor positioning [3], and for vehicular communications in the C ‐band [16, 17]. For the sake of completeness, the patch design is briefly summarised here, and its geometrical parameters shown in Fig.…”

“…In the ideal case, the modules of the four desired transmission parameters, |Ŝ n,0 |, are identical to 1/2, and the desired incremental phases,f n+1,0 −f n,0 , is equal to 2p/n, for n = 1, 2, 3, 4. In view of this consideration, an optimisation procedure is carried out [2] with the following cost function measuring the error between the realised values S n0 and the nominal valuesŜ n0…”
