A first sketch of Computer Aided Ideation : Exploring CAD tools as externalization media in design ideation

Abstract: These four papers constitute the research foundation for this licentiate thesis. They are appended in full at the end of the thesis. The four papers will be referred to as Paper AD in the text. The co-authors listed are the students who did the work which the cases are based on (Patrik Andersson, Johan Jönsson and Jens Wängdahl) and the main supervisor of the thesis, Renee Wever.

“…This allows users to create a design that can then be further modified in the process. It should be noted that these tools do not take the form of a set programmed system, but a design aid that can be used to define, coordinate, and explore the design space with designers' intervention (Ekströmer 2019;Wortmann and Tunçer 2017;Oxman 2017;Ringley 2020;Zboinska 2015). 3.…”

“…Early design stages do not require CAAD accuracy and functionality Aliakseyeu (2003) and Goldschmidt (2017) CAAD geometric precision CAAD requires geometric precision which makes it unsuited for early design stages Aliakseyeu (2003) and Stappers and Hennessey (1999) CAAD for detailing and producing end-product CAAD/CAED supports the design process during the design of details; it is a tool for the completion of design schemes Stappers and Hennessey (1999), Ye et al (2006), Fuge et al (2012), andVuletic et al (2018) CAAD technical problems/ software bugs Designers' focus is distracted by technical problems and software bugs, especially during the early stages of ideas and creativity Robertson and Radcliffe (2009) of CAAD tools clearly differs from traditional pencil and paper sketches. Moreover, it seems no longer valid to think that CAAD tools do not encourage experimentation and unexpected interpretation (Ekströmer 2019;Zboinska 2015). The modern sketch interface "is an integrated and interoperable workflow including both direct model/illustration tools in partner with data/analysis tools" (Engel 2019).…”
