A first-generation porcine whole-genome radiation hybrid map

Abstract: A whole-genome radiation hybrid (WG-RH) panel was used to generate a first-generation radiation map of the porcine (Sus scrofa) genome. Over 900 Type I and II markers were used to amplify the INRA-University of Minnesota porcine Radiation Hybrid panel (IMpRH) comprised of 118 hybrid clones. Average marker retention frequency of 29.3% was calculated with 757 scorable markers. The RHMAP program established 128 linkage groups covering each chromosome (n = 19) at a lod >/= 4.8. Fewer than 10% of the markers (59) c… Show more

“…An advantage of RH mapping is that different doses of radiation can be used to construct maps with varying levels of resolution Lunetta et al 1996;Schuler et al 1996;Stewart et al 1997). This work has been followed by RH mapping in a number of other animal species (McCarthy et al 1997;Priat et al 1998;Yerle et al 1998;Hawken et al 1999;Hukriede et al 1999;Kwok et al 1999;Murphy et al 1999;Vignaux et al 1999;Watanabe et al 1999). In addition to whole-genome RH mapping, other researchers have focused on mapping specific chromosomes and chromosomal regions in different species as well (Hoover and Floros 1998;Barendse et al 2000;Ozawa et al 2000;Liu et al 2002;Rink et al 2002).…”

“…Six groups of fibres (pure: slow, 2A, 2X and 2B, and hybrid: 2A-2X and 2X-gene expresssion in the pig is quickly growing (Hawken et al, 1999;Yao et al, 2002) and makes the pig a candidate for complete genome sequencing.…”
