A first estimation of the impact of public health actions against COVID-19 in Veneto (Italy)

Abstract: Background Veneto is one of the first Italian regions where the COVID-19 outbreak started spreading. Containment measures were approved soon thereafter. The present study aims at providing a first look at the impact of the containment measures on the outbreak progression in the Veneto region, Italy. Methods A Bayesian changepoint analysis was used to identify the changing speed of the epidemic curve. Then, a piecewise polynomial model was considered to fit the data in the first period before the detected chang… Show more

“…Possible causes of the observed increase include the large size of undiagnosed severe COVID-19 cases, the reduced access to health services due to the disruption of the normal work processes, the forced reassurance of sick patients affected by other diseases who avoided accessing hospitals or clinics for fear of contamination, and possibly other mechanisms. The effect of the COVID-19 epidemic on the Italian health system in terms of ICU admissions and hospitalizations has been analyzed in detail elsewhere [32] and results are only summarized here. ICU admissions showed a sharp increase from the last days of February until reaching a peak of 4208 admissions on April 3rd, followed by a decreasing trend ( Figure S1).…”

“…In the absence of effective treatment for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), lockdown appeared as an effective strategy to control its spread [ 1 ]. The French government applied strict lockdown measures for 54 days, reducing the spread of the disease in France, COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths [ 2 ].…”

“…This strategy impacted the progression of the COVID-19 epidemic in Veneto in a different way compared to other high prevalence Italian regions [9,10]. The most recent regional data showed a significant improvement of the epidemic curve with reduced new cases, decreased intensive care unit patients, and increased recoveries [11].…”
