A first attempt to evaluate the toxicity to Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin exposed to rare earth elements

Abstract: The increasing use and demand of rare earth elements in many emerging technologies is leading to a potentially higher input to the marine environment. This study compared for the first time the effect of lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), neodymium (Nd), samarium (Sm), europium (Eu), gadolinium (Gd), dysprosium (Dy), and erbium (Er) to the microalga Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin. The algal growth inhibition was investigated after 72 h of exposure. The median effect concentrations (EC50) ranged from 0.98 mg/L to 1… Show more

“…Here, the nominal EC 20 and EC 50 obtained from standard 72 h exposure were used for the long-term exposure of P. tricornutum to Ce or Gd. These obtained values were for both Ce (2.39 mg/L for EC 20 , and 3.13 for EC 50 ) and Gd (4.52 mg/L for EC 20 , and 6.02 for EC 50 ) higher than those previously obtained by Siciliano et al [26].…”

“…REE tolerance mechanisms have been reported in plants such as Dicranopteris linearis, Phytolacca sp., Helianthus Annuus [32][33][34], and in microalgae such as Galdieria sulphuraria and Desmodesmus quadricauda [35,36], but very little information concerns diatoms [26].…”

“…For example, high levels (in the ng L −1 range) of gadolinium, from gadolinium-based contrast agents, have been frequently documented in aquatic environments in developed countries, and lanthanum and samarium have been detected in the river Rhine at alarmingly high concentrations [ 11 ]. Therefore, REEs are considered in all respects a new category of emerging contaminants, and public awareness and concern are gradually increasing [ 3 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ].…”
