A fire modeling approach to assess wildfire exposure of valued resources in central Navarra, Spain

Abstract: Wildfires are a growing threat to socioeconomic and natural resources in the wildland-rural-urban intermix in central Navarra (Spain), where recent fastspreading and spotting short fire events have overwhelmed suppression capabilities. A fire simulation modeling approach based on the minimum travel time algorithm was used to analyze the wildfire exposure of highly valued resources and assets (HVRAs) in a 28,000 ha area. We replicated 30,000 fires at fine resolution (20 m), based on wildfire season and recent f… Show more

“…It also is exacerbated by climate change [17]. Likewise, the ever-increasing focus on simulating potential wildfire risk to prioritize resources and suppression efforts in areas of potential catastrophic loss from wildfires are useful, but incomplete [7,18,19]. Such efforts often do not directly address what may be the most dynamic and variable facet influencing the wildfire problem-historic and ongoing human behaviours, including collective action among at-risk populations that could help significantly alleviate the suppression burden of public agencies.…”
