A high intensity source of continuous x-radiation is described, with energy below 3.0 keV and designed specifically for absorption measurements with a Johann curved crystal vacuum spectrometer and gas counter detection system. The anode current is focused on to the edge (2 cm x 0.025 cm) of a thin W or Ta blade, and the emitted radiation is received in the end-on direction at a small take-off angle (6"). Stable operation is obtained with anode currents up to 140 mA at 1.6 kV ht. Constructional details, electrical characteristics and general performance data are given, including the effects of tube voltage and variation of x-ray take-off angle on the intensity of the first order spectra.
