A field evaluation of mortality rate and growth performance in pigs vaccinated against porcine circovirus type 2

Abstract: Results suggested that vaccination against PCV2 was effective at reducing mortality rate and improving growth performance among pigs in a herd infected with PCV2.

“…Several studies proved that all vaccines give very good results with respect to limiting losses due to PCVD (Kixmoller et al 2008, Fort et al 2009). In herds where losses associated to PCVD affect mainly growers and finishers vaccination of piglets should be applied (Cline et al 2008, Horlen et al 2008, Pejsak et al 2010. Additionally, ear necrosis reduction was reported in pigs after vaccination against PCV2 (Pejsak et al 2011).…”

“…orcine circovirus-associated disease (PCVAD) encompasses a variety of progressive disease syndromes that include a variety of clinical signs, such as respiratory distress, wasting, dermatitis, reduced growth performance, and reproductive failure (3,4,12). A new syndrome, acute pulmonary edema (APE), is characterized by the rapid onset of respiratory distress followed by death (5).…”

“…CP expressed in baculovirus or Escherichia coli spontaneously forms a virus-like particle (VLP), demonstrating that CP alone is sufficient for capsid formation (15,19,45,46). Recombinant vaccines incorporating baculovirus-expressed CP (Bac-CP) are effective in reducing viremia, improving growth performance, and protecting against PCVAD (7,12,16,24). Another vaccine approach is the expression of CP using a PCV1 backbone (8).…”

“…The results of these studies indicate that ORF2 plays a significant role in the recombination of PCV2a and PCV2b, which generates new viral strains with different ORF2 sizes. ORF2 encodes proteins that are associated with viral structure and virulence, such as Cap (Horlen et al, 2008). The Cap protein is considered one of the major antigenic determinants, and functions efficiently in viral attachment to host cell surface receptors (Misinzo et al, 2006;Finsterbusch and Mankertz, 2009).…”
