A fiber Bragg grating-based smart wearable belt for monitoring knee joint postures

Abstract: Smart wearable technology is exceedingly desirable in athletic sports due to being lightweight, flexible to bend, soft and comfortable. It can continuously deliver accurate information and deformation. During knee flexion, the upper knee perimeter increases with the shrinkage of the knee joint flexor, and it can be monitored. In this study, a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) smart belt is fabricated by embedding FBG sensors at the center of a special silica gel (with unique adhering characteristics to fix FBG on the … Show more

“…The smart belt can not only monitor the user’s sitting posture at all times, but also track the user’s activity time and sleep time. Active Protective, a healthcare start-up company, has developed a smart belt that not only detects the fall of the elderly, but also adds a miniature airbag to the belt to ensure that it can cushion the elderly when they fall and avoid hip fractures [ 76 ].…”

“…For this reason, most of the studies for joint kinematics focused on the development and assessment of wearables based on FBGs [47]- [49] Usually, to improve their robustness and performances, FBGs have been housed into more flexible structures made of polymers such as Polyvinyl chloride -PVC [47]- [49], Dragon Skin™ silicone families [50], [51], polylactic acid -PLA [52], and Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) [53]. Buttons, belts, Velcro® strips, and tapes have been used as bonding elements.…”

“…The end result is completely incorrect. Dimension measurement, object positioning in the physical world, orientation determination, and computer and data processing are all part of the motion capture tech-nique [2]. By installing a specific tracker in the key parts of the moving object, the movement capture system captures its position and attitude, and after computer processing, it is saved as data that can be applied in animation production.…”
