A Feasible Solution for Rebalancing Large-Scale Bike Sharing Systems

Abstract: City bikes and bike-sharing systems (BSSs) are one solution to the last mile problem. BSSs guarantee equity by presenting affordable alternative transportation means for low-income households. These systems feature a multitude of bike stations scattered around a city. Numerous stations mean users can borrow a bike from one location and return it there or to a different location. However, this may create an unbalanced system, where some stations have excess bikes and others have limited bikes. In this paper, we… Show more

“…A higher connectivity count, denoted by c ij (t), indicates a stronger borrowing and returning relationship between the stations. The calculation of the interstation connectivity count (c ij (t)) between stations i and j within unit time t is shown in Equation (5).…”

“…High-capacity and rapid public transportation modes such as metro and buses address the long-distance travel needs of urban residents [4]. However, the site selection results of existing public transportation hubs evidently fail to meet residents' 'last-mile' travel demands [5]. Hence, public bicycles emerge as the optimal solution to address the 'lastmile' travel issue [6].…”

“…Despite delivering optimum answers, due to exponential complexity, appropriate procedures require a disproportionately long computation for large-scale problems. On the other hand, heuristic techniques for PDP and VRP can handle large-scale cases with a relatively good processing efficiency [ 24 28 ]. To cope with large-scale PDP, Li and Lim [ 29 ] proposed a tabu-embedded simulated annealing technique based on the shift, exchange and devised rearrange operators.…”
