A Fault-Tolerant Cascaded Switched-Capacitor Multilevel Inverter for Domestic Applications in Smart Grids

Abstract: Cascaded multilevel inverters (MLIs) generate an output voltage using series-connected power modules that employ standard configurations of low-voltage components. Each module may employ one or more switched capacitors to double or quadruple its input voltage. The higher number of switched capacitors and semiconductor switches in MLIs compared to conventional two-level inverters has led to concerns about overall system reliability. A fault-tolerant design can mitigate this reliability issue. If one part of the… Show more

“…The integration of the sustainable resources in smart grid is of particular importance [46]. This is mostly due to an effort to mitigate energy saving, clean energy, and climate change, as well as pressure by the governments to promote sustainable development and zero carbon emission [47][48][49][50]. The integration of renewable energy resources in the smart grid supports sus-tainable development [51].…”

“…However, the reliability may decrease as the number of switches increases to secure low total harmonic distortion (THD). Accordingly, research to improve the reliability of multilevel inverters is being introduced [11]- [21]. This paper compares the reliability, economics, and efficiency of two CHBMIs that can generate 27-level output voltage.…”

“…Therefore, by increasing the number of output voltage levels of these topologies, the number of capacitors increases, which can disturb the voltage balance of the capacitors. Switching losses increase due to the high number of switches [9].…”
