A fault location and detection technique for STATCOM compensated transmission lines using game theory

Abstract: This study aims at proposing an original single‐end protection scheme for the compensated transmission line using traveling waves and game theory. To this end, this paper initially investigates the effects of static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) on traveling waves passing through STATCOM installation point. Furthermore, based on the traveling wave theory, it evaluates the impacts of STATCOM's harmonic on conventional protections. A single‐end method will be proposed in the next stage for fault protection o… Show more

“…However, there are also some cases where the test results are completely consistent with the actual icing thickness of the line. Although the method in Reference [5] exhibits higher stability, the overall error between the detection results and the actual results is relatively large, always between 0.61% and 0.10%. In contrast, the error between the detection results of the method in this article and the actual icing thickness of the line has always been at a low level, with a maximum error of only 0.24%.…”

“…5 h for simulation analysis. Based on this, with a distance of 10.0m as the unit distance, the Reference [4] method and the Reference [5] method were used as the control group for testing, and the relationship between the three methods and the actual icing thickness was statistically analyzed. Among them, for the determination of the actual icing thickness, this article uses manual detection to calculate the difference between the diameter of the line after icing and the diameter corresponding to the line specification.…”

“…Figure 9 shows noise in the energy signal, which is ignored by the MMF method. Δt is determined by method in [28,31], and the distance between the reflected-forward waves is calculated according to Equation ( 1). The distance of the reflected-forward wave is 3223 m from the sensor.…”

“…However, the proposed scheme requires accurate modeling of the system. A game theory approach is adopted for fault location in STATCOM compensated system in Reference 4 Game theory is used to discriminate traveling waves and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is utilized to process the signals. The performance of this approach gets affected by choice of mother wavelets and level of decomposition during use of DWT.…”
