A Fast Multi-tasking Solution: NMF-Theoretic Co-clustering for Gear Fault Diagnosis under Variable Working Conditions

Abstract: Most gear fault diagnosis (GFD) approaches suffer from inefficiency when facing with multiple varying working conditions at the same time. In this paper, a non-negative matrix factorization (NMF)-theoretic co-clustering strategy is proposed specially to classify more than one task at the same time using the high dimension matrix, aiming to offer a fast multi-tasking solution. The short-time Fourier transform (STFT) is first used to obtain the time-frequency features from the gear vibration signal. Then, the op… Show more

“…Gear pitting is one of the common defects in gear faults [1,2]. At present, the mainstream gear fault diagnosis method is to analyze the vibration signal for gearbox fault diagnosis [3][4][5][6], and the obtained results cannot judge the type, size, shape, position and other detailed information of the gear fault. According to the standard requirements of "Gear Surface Bearing Capacity Test Method" (GB/T 14229-93), gear pitting area ratio is an important index to judge whether the gear is failure.…”

“…However, an intelligent fault diagnosis based on shallow learning has certain limitations. According to the literature [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8], an excellent diagnostic performance depends directly on the quality of the extracted features. This limitation indirectly leads us to a significant amount of energy on tedious feature extraction and feature selection.…”

“…Gear has been used extensively in transmission system due to its large velocity ratio, strong bearing capacity, compactness and high efficiency [1][2][3][4]. Gear fault diagnosis (GFD) also becomes one of the most important research hotspots from both industrial and academic communities for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of gear transmission system.…”
