MÉTHODES ROBUSTES DE MOUVEMENT DE MAILLAGES HYBRIDES: APPLICATION AUX PROBLÈMES DE FRONTIÈRES MOBILESJonathan LANDRY RÉSUMÉ L'objectif principal de ce mémoire est de développer un Algorithme de Mouvement de Maillage (AMM) suffisament robuste qui sera capable d'adapter les maillages de la majorité des problèmes de frontières mobiles. Ainsi, une nouvelle méthodologie est implémentée à partir de la meilleure combinaison provenant d'algorithmes connus dans le but de mieux préserver la qualité des maillages initiaux.Dans la majorité des simulations, les AMMs standards sont capables de déplacer le maillage en conservant une bonne qualité de maillage, toutefois quand le mouvement est complexe et/ou qu'il y a une interaction multi-corps ils génèrent des maillages invalides. Alors, la nouvelle approche est constituée de trois algorithmes: la fonction pondérée de la distance inverse (PDI) pour produire le champ de déplacements, les algorithmes de lissages de la Méthode de Transformation Géométrique d'Élément (MéTGÉ) pour améliorer la qualité du maillage résultant et un nouvel algorithme basé sur la MéTGÉ qui est capable de réparer les maillages invalides. Il a été prouvé qu'avec cette méthodologie des problèmes de frontières mobiles très difficiles peuvent être résolus.L'approche proposée a été démontrée efficace pour adapter les maillages de différentes situations aéroélastiques réalistes: une aile symétrique a subi une grande flexion et une grande torsion induites au bout de l'aile; et les dispositifs hypersustentateurs de deux ailes (une rectangulaire et une avec une flèche) ont été déplacés vers différentes positions de vol.Finalement, il a été prouvé qu'avec la méthode proposée, la majorité des maillages pour les problèmes d'IFS peuvent ê...

In this chapter we are concerned with mesh generation methods and mesh adaptivity issues. Nowadays, many techniques are available to complete meshes of arbitrary domains for computational purposes. Planar, surface, and volume meshing have been automated to a large extent. Over the past few years, meshing activities have focused on adaptive schemes where the features of a solution field must be accurately captured. To this end, meshing techniques must be revisited in order to be capable of completing high‐quality meshes conforming to these features. Error estimates are therefore used to analyze the solution field at a given stage and, based on the results and the information they yield, adapted meshes are created before computing the next stage of the solution field. A number of novel meshing issues must be addressed including how to construct a mesh adapted to what the error estimate prescribes, how to validate and construct high‐order meshes, how to handle large‐size meshes, how to consider moving boundary problems, and so on.

Summary Aircraft holding around busy airports may be requested to sustain as much as 45 min of icing before landing or being diverted to another airport. In this paper, a three‐dimensional mesh deformation scheme, based on a structural frame analogy, is proposed for the numerical simulation of ice accretion during extended exposure to adverse weather conditions. The goal is to provide an approach that is robust and efficient enough to delay or altogether avoid re‐meshing while preserving (enforcing) nearly orthogonal elements at the highly distorted ice surface. Robustness is achieved by suitably modifying the axial and torsional stiffness components of the frame elements in order to handle large and irregular grid displacements typical of in‐flight icing. Computational efficiency is obtained by applying the mesh displacement to an automatically selected small subset of the entire computational domain. The methodology is validated first in the case of deformations typical of fluid‐structure interaction problems, including wing bending, a helicopter rotor in forward flight, and the twisting of a high‐lift wing configuration. The approach is then assessed for aero‐icing on two swept wings and compared against experimental measurements where available. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
