A facile chemical exfoliation method to obtain large size boron nitride nanosheets

Abstract: Owning many peculiar properties, hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) have lots of potential applications, such as electronic devices and deep ultraviolet emitters. In this article, a chemical exfoliation method to prepare few-layer and large size BNNSs is reported. Through related instrument characterizations, we demonstrated that this preparation method can allow the exfoliation of BNNSs from bulk BN powder successfully. From CL spectra, the as-prepared BNNSs were proved to show stronger CL emission ab… Show more

“…5a (similar to the data of BN before thermal exfoliation, not shown here) could be ascribed to the exposure of BNNSs to atmosphere or the XPS measurements, which is common for XPS analysis. 15 Besides, FT-IR and Raman analyses were further used to characterize the lattice vibration modes of the BNNSs. In the FT-IR spectrum shown in Figure 6(a), only two peaks centered at 1381 cm -1 and 815 cm -1 can be observed, assigned to in-plane B-N stretching (in-plane ring vibration, the E 1u mode) and B-N bending (out-of-plane vibration, A 2u mode), respectively.…”

“…For example, BNNSs can be used as a two-dimensional filler, [5] nonwetting coatings, [6] field emitters, [7] and an ideal substrate for high-quality graphene electronics. [13][14][15] The published studies on the possible magnetic properties of fluorinated BNNSs (F-BNNSs) or boron nitride nanotubes (F-BNNTs) are of theoretical nature. In recent experimental studies, monolayer and few-layer BNNSs have been successfully prepared from bulk h-BN powder by the mechanical milling method, [9] chemical vapour deposition, [10,11] molten hydroxides method, [12] and chemical-solution-derived method.…”

“…In addition, the prominent peaks implicated in h-BN structure and reflection peak of (002) and (004) were manifested at 26.4° and 54.8°, respectively, as shown in XRD spectrum of Fig. S3(b)34. After etching, on the other hand, the two peaks (44.4° and 51.9°) corresponded to the (111) and (200) planes of the nickel disappeared in the XRD spectrum, implying the removal of nickel catalyst35.…”
