A Fabric Sound Evaluation System for Totally Auditory-Sensible Textiles

Abstract: In order to provide a fabric sound evaluation system for designing auditory-sensible fabrics, sound parameters are obtained, including the level pressure of total sound (LPT), sound color factors (Δ L and Δ f ), three coefficients (ARC, ARF, ARE) of autoregressive models based on the fast fourier transform spectrum, loudness(Z) and sharpness(Z) from Zwicker's psychoacoustic models, and mechanical properties from KES values for wool suiting fabrics. As psychophysical characteristics, subjective sens… Show more

“…Given the importance of fabric sound in the textile and clothing industry, many textile research papers have focused on quantifying the sound of various fabrics and understanding the relationship between sound and mechanical properties [1][2][3][4][5][6]. However, most of this research has focused on woven fabrics, not on knitted fabrics.…”

“…Fabric sound can affect psychological stability of the garment wearer and others in the vicinity of the garment user (Cho et al, 2009). Fabric sound can be either pleasant or irksome, the extent of which is dependent on circumstances (Yi and Cho, 2000;Yi et al, 2002;Yi, 2005).…”

“…Fabric sound amplitude and frequency are considered to be affected by factors such fabric friction, roughness, shear, and bending stiffness (Yi and Cho, 2000). Previous researches in the field of fabric sound have investigated the fabric sound in relation to mechanical properties of the fabric and have attempted to characterize frictional generated fabric sound (Yi et al, 2002;Cho and Yi, 2000). Fabric sound has been objectively analyzed in terms of the effect of constituent fiber cross-section shape, fiber type, and weaves Kim et al, 2002).…”

“…In the previous studies of fabric sound, the relationship between mechanical properties and sound parameters for various fabrics has been investigated to quantify the characteristics of frictional sounds [3][4][5]. The fabric noise has been analyzed by cross-sectional shapes of fibers, fiber type, and weaves to calculate objective factors affecting them [6][7][8].…”
