Abstract

The experience of Angicos The Governor Aluísio Alves launched a mass alphabetization program in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, which was financed by Aliança para o Progresso (in English, Alliance for Progress). He chose Angicos, the town where he was born, in order to experiment an innovative and effective method. In January of 1963, a group of 17 young college students and two high-school students arrived in Angicos to start the culture circles in place of the classrooms. At the beginning, there were debates about what was part of nature and about what mankind made. Then, with the syllables of the generative words, the participants would make up their own words. On the 2 nd of April, the closing ceremony counted on the presence of the President of the Republic and on the confirmation of Paulo Freire's method effectiveness.
