Abstract:Neste artigo aborda-se as primeiras leituras brasileiras e os usos públicos do romance abolicionista A Cabana do Pai Tomás [1852], da estadunidense Harriet Beecher Stowe. Considerando-se o anseio do romance realista oitocentista de desvelar o social, apresenta-se os procedimentos formais adotados assim como sua recepção por leitores do Brasil escravista.
