A Empirical Study of Industrial Design Contribution to Advances in Timber Materials Science

Abstract: Materials Science typically engages research expertise from fields such as engineering, chemistry and physics. This paper will examine how industrial design successfully contributed to timber materials science in the initial phases of basic research. Research from two PhD studies, completed in conjunction with the Australian Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Wood Innovations, will be used as case studies. These case studies discuss examples from research projects investigating new Microwave Modified Timber… Show more

“…These industrial design strategies cover a wide array of opportunities for Balanced Scorecard for industrial design management to enhance through measurement of performance and management by firmwide strategy. For example, contributing to scientific experiment design to ascertain a better research direction (Thong & Kuys, 2012), using "inclusive design principles to develop appealing assistive products" (Kuys & Renda, 2013), improving design outcomes through special focus on design brief formulation (Yang & Renda, 2019) or use of "frugal innovation" (Rao, 2018;Weyrauch & Herstatt, 2017) to create new product concepts cheaply and rapidly. The framework in this research can support these strategies by integrating them into one which involves the entire firm and appends appropriate measures that quantify staff contribution.…”

“…With a qualitative research approach, Moultrie (2015) identifies contributions with the demonstrators in the domain of design and Simeone et al (2016) highlight designers' ability to work as translators in multidisciplinary projects. Specifically in scientific material development, studies have identified that designers can contribute testing properties and manufacturing processes for materials, in addition to exploring commercial applications for them (Kotlarewski et al, 2016, Thong andKuys, 2012). These contributions clearly show that science-design collaboration is important to increase the commercial output of scientific research, and can solve many of the problems surrounding the valley of death.…”
