A dynamo theory of solar flares

Abstract: It is proposed that the solar flare phenomenon can be understood as a manifestation of the electrodynamic coupling process of the photosphere-chromosphere-corona system as a whole. The system is coupled by electric currents, flowing along (both upward and downward) and across the magnetic field lines, powered by the dynamo process driven by the neutral wind in the photosphere and the lower chromosphere. A self-consistent formulation of the proposed coupling system is given. It is shown in particular that the c… Show more

“…This becomes clear in treating it as an equivalent electric circuit. The electric circuit approach has been applied to the different problems of solar and stellar physics including flares (e.g., Alfvén & Carlqvist 1967;Spicer 1976;Kan et al 1983;Melrose & McClymont 1987;Melrose 1991;Zaitsev & Stepanov 1992;Zaitsev et al 1998) (Miller et al 1994). In our case an appropriate loop (a source of accelerated particles) may be the compact emerging magnetic flux EL shown in Fig. 1b.…”

“…This fact indicates that magnetic shear must be increased above some critical level before and during flare onset. A dynamo process associated with motions of photospheric gas may be needed (Kan et al, 1983;Akasofu, 1984). In fact, a rapid rotation of one of the sunspots in the pair was observed during a recent typical flare (Fig.…”

“…It is becoming widely accepted that coronal heating is due to the dissipation of either AC or DC currents in coronal loops [SO, 511. One model of a flare is that it is a nonlinear response to a steady change in the input power, with the idea being that if the dissipation rate has to adjust too rapidly or too far, then it can only do so through an explosive change in configuration [52]. However, these ideas remain speculative: at present bulk energization is simply not adequately understood.…”
