Mixed model production system means that various products are manufactured alternately in a line, and it has become a popular system in the era of multi-product small-quantity production. However, in the mixed model production system using flow line, the unbalance among stations is not inevitable because the workloads of stations cannot be the same. Thus, flow line system has been replaced to cellular manufacturing system for reducing the loss of waiting due to the unbalance of stations. In this paper, we introduce the simulation case study of an automated welding line which produces the parts of excavator. The factory has considered replacing the mixed model flow line to the cellular manufacturing system based on FMC concept. The increase of production quantity is estimated about 26.7%, and the lead time is reduced more than 55%. Furthermore sensitivity analyses are conducted considering the changes of product-mix.

In automotive industry, painted body storage (PBS) is generally employed as a buffering and re-sequencing site, which has the capabilities of levelling unmatched production capacity and balancing different optimisation objects between paint shop and trim shop. Takt time becomes shorter with the growth of automotive production, and product configurations become more diverse with the increase of customising requirements. However, PBSs in many automotive enterprises are still manual or semi-manual monitored and controlled. Since manual operation is time consuming and error prone, manually operated PBS has become efficient bottleneck of production in automobile factory. In this article, a radio frequency identification (RFID) enabled real-time monitoring system (RRMS) is developed to improve visualisation and controllability of the PBS in a Chinese multi-purpose vehicle manufacturer. RRMS improves the efficiency of operation and makes PBS into a transparent, open and controllable system. Moreover, integrated with manufacturing execution system, RRMS provides a longer deterministic list of about-tobe-trimmed car-bodies for assembly sequencing and material delivering, which doubles the time in advance for production supervisor and material deliverer. As an indispensable part of the practical application research, this article finally discusses some non-technical issues in the system designing and implementation.

In the car company, the painted body storage (PBS) is set up between the paint shop and the assembly shop. It stores the vehicles in production and reorders the vehicles sequence. To improve production efficiency of assembly shop, a mathematical model is developed aiming at minimizing the consumption rate of options and the total overtime and idle time. As the PBS sequencing process contains upstream sequence inbound and downstream sequence outbound, this paper proposes an algorithm with two phases. In the first phase, the discrete small-world optimization algorithm (DSWOA) is applied to schedule the inbound sequence by employing the short-range nodes and the long-range nodes in order to realize the global searching. In the second phase, the heuristic algorithm is applied to schedule the outbound sequencing. The proposed model and algorithm are applied in an automobile enterprise. The results indicate that the two-phase algorithm is suitable for the PBS sequencing problem and the DSWOA has a better searching performance than GA in this problem. The sensitivity of model parameters is analyzed as well.
