A DTI study to probe tumor microstructure and its connection with hypoxia

Abstract: Solid tumors have chaotic organization of blood vessels, disruptive nerve paths and muscle fibers that result in a hostile and heterogeneous microenvironment. These tumor regions are often hypoxic and resistant to radiation therapy. The knowledge of partial pressure of oxygen concentration (pO2), in conjunction with the information about tissue organization, can predict tissue health and may eventually be used in combination with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for targeted destruction of radiatio… Show more

“…These novel findings reached significance with a negative correlation in terms of both FA and Cs, and a positive correlation in terms of Cp, RD, and MD. By accepting the concept that DTI parameters represent some aspects of histological tumor organization, 14,22 we may speculate about the different subtypes of meningiomas that were included in our cohort study and their different responses to GKRS.…”

“…T 2 was calculated using the following equation: S1). 50,55 Finally, using a validated 56 IDL-based MRI analysis software version 00020170123 (http://marecilab.mbi.ufl.edu/software/MAS; last accessed March 30, 2017), mean diffusivity, radial diffusivity, fractional anisotropy (FA), and eigenvalues (l1, l2, l3) were all determined within a region of interest in posterior compartment muscles (GAS-soleus complex). Mean diffusivity and radial diffusivity were calculated using (l1 þ l2 þ l3/3) and (l2 þ l3/2), respectively.…”

“…Microstructure, [262] fibrosis, [263] tumour grading, [264]prognosis a) Intracellular pH (pHi): Intracellular pH (pHi) varies in many disease states, including cancer, affecting many biological processes such as enzymatic reaction rates, energy metabolism and reactive oxygen species production. Therefore, pHi is a known biomarker of altered cellular function and of response to interventions such as radiation therapy.…”
