A Drilling Rate Model for Roller Cone Bits and Its Application

Abstract: Modeling bit performance is a scientific approach to optimizing drilling performance. Drilling rate or rate of penetration (ROP) is one of bit performance indexes. Several ROP models for roller cone bits have been developed over the years. However, there exist errors to some extent between these models and the field. This is because of the technical complexity of the bit-rock interaction. This paper introduces a new ROP model based on the interaction mechanism between drill bit and rock. The ROP model takes in… Show more

“…In better words, mud properties, e.g., density and viscosity, and the effect of jet impact force were incorporated in ROP modeling. Improvement and development of empirical ROP models was then followed by several researchers [22][23][24][25][26][27].…”

“…A numerical model is presented in his study to optimise drilling performance. The penetration rate is the bit performance index, which plays an essential role in drilling operations and predicts the impact of rock formations' strength on drill bits 3 . The Rate of Penetration (ROP) is altered by variables like Weight on Bit (WOB), rotational speed, bit wear, concluded that the drill bit performance is related to drilling parameters, bit life and ROP.…”

“…Moreover, it is applied as a quasi-nondestructive field method and easily facilitated because of non-sampling and simple movement (Kalantari et al, 2018). Researchers have developed several methods for estimating rock strength based on forces limit equilibrium and energy equilibrium (Merchant, 1945;Evans, 1962;Nishimatsu, 1972;Roxborough and Philips, 1975;Nakajima and Kinoshita, 1979;Hoover and Middleton, 1981;Detournay and Defourny, 1992;Wojtanowicz and Kuru, 1993;Gerbaud et al, 2006;Franca, 2010;Hareland, 2010;Chiaia et al, 2013). However, except for Nakajima and Kinoshita's model and Gerbaud' model, the crushed zone has not been considered in the proposed relations between the drilling data and rock strength.…”
