A draft code of practice for research and monitoring in protected areas

Abstract: Protected areas are favoured sites for ecological research and monitoring and responsible, well-managed research can help to improve management effectiveness and enhance conservation outcomes. Many countries have formalized processes for approving and monitoring research within their protected area systems. There are already a number of codes addressing ethical and social issues with respect to research in protected areas, sacred natural sites and in the traditional territories of indigenous peoples and local … Show more

“…Monitoring underpins ecosystem management, allowing evaluation of management effectiveness and ongoing improvement of management plans. Monitoring is also critical for tracking the mitigation of threatening processes and for reporting important trends to managers, local communities, visitors, and other stakeholders (Hockings et al 2013). Embedded scientists can drive the design and maintenance of long-term monitoring that is aligned with management priorities (Carruthers 2017).…”

“…Research suggests that closer integration between monitoring and the rest of management activities facilitates management effectiveness [33]. Currently, both sides of the Channel are using many similar and potentially compatible techniques to monitor conservation features, such as towed video, multibeam sonar, core sampling etc.…”

“…Clear, shared and regularly implemented monitoring protocols including the features requiring monitoring, their conservation objectives, frequency of monitoring, responsibility for monitoring, standardised monitoring techniques, data sharing and adequate reporting and disclosure of monitoring results could help to ensure that all conservation features in the Channel are properly monitored and assessed in the most efficient way ( [54]; [33]). To facilitate consistency, the European Commission has issued technical criteria and methodological standards to monitor Good Environmental Status of marine waters [21].…”

“…However we also encourage established and more senior researchers and academics to submit relevant, applied articles in the journal -not because of the academic standing of the journal but as a way to communicate more directly with conservation practitioners. We are working to develop a clear ethical framework for researchers operating in protected areas (see Hockings et al, 2013).…”
