A doxycycline‐treated hydroxyapatite implant surface attenuates the progression of peri‐implantitis: A radiographic and histological study in mice

Abstract: Background Oral rehabilitation with dental implants has become increasingly common; however, the increase of peri‐implantitis is a great concern. Doxycycline (DOX) is a widely used antibiotic that inhibits bacteria growth, inflammation, and bone resorption. Objectives To evaluate the progression of peri‐implantitis of hydroxyapatite (HA)‐coated implants with (5 mg/mL, DOX group) or without (HA group) DOX treatment on the surface. Materials and Methods The maxillary first molars of 20 male mice were extracted. … Show more

“…Nyon, Switzerland) [ 22 ]. A tetracycline hydrochloride powder was then mixed with saline solution (B. Braun, Melsugen AG, Germany) and applied on the surgical site for about 2 min [ 23 ]. Another cycle of copious irrigation with saline solution (B. Braun, Melsugen AG, Germany) for 1 min followed the previous step.…”

“… Peri-implantitis was also obtained in a recent study of oral infection with Porphyromonas gingivalis [ 408 ]. Since the model has been well established, some applications have emerged, namely, analysis of the impact of different implant surfaces on peri-implantitis [ 409 ] or inflammation pathways [ 410 ]. Summary : Mice seem to be a promising model for genetic research thanks to the ability to perform knock-out studies and the availability of models of human disease.…”

“…Although results demonstrated successful antibiofilm effects, bacterial resistance against tetracyclines is common, and due to their photo-oxidative potential, tetracyclines can cause purple staining of teeth, limiting their use clinically [57,63]. However, their anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anticollagenase, and immunosuppressive properties have seen the use of doxycyclines in bone scaffolds to promote bone growth and reduce peri-implantitis [64,65].…”
