A Downhill Simplex Method for Computation of Interfacial Heat Transfer Coefficients in Alloy Casting

Abstract: This article describes methods used for obtaining both the thermal contact resistance (TCR) between an alloy casting and the mold, and the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) between the mold and a bath that is used to control the speed of the solidification process. Both the Downhill Simplex optimization method and Beck's approach are used in the inverse task. These inverse tasks, which simultaneously compute both the TCR and HTC, use a model involving a phase change during the solidification of the alloy. An aut… Show more

“…There is another configuration of the experimental stand in which the test plate is stationary and the water flows at the plate. In this configuration, the trolley is stationary together with the cooled plate and there are no spraying 1 -cooling medium supply; 2 -pressure gauge; 3 -nozzle; 4 -moving deflector; 5 -manifold; 6 -tested sample; 7 -moving trolley; 8 -datalogger; 9 -roller; 10 -electric motor; 11 -hauling steel wire rope; 12 nozzles. Water is supplied by a pump station and is distributed by a chamber, making a water layer of given thickness and adjustable velocity which is flowing over the plate.…”
